At Prospect House Farm Campsite, we’re lucky to be nestled in the heart of the North York Moors National Park, one of the most stunning and tranquil areas in the UK. But what many people don't realise is that our campsite also offers a chance to witness one of nature’s most spectacular phenomena—the Aurora Borealis, or the Northern Lights.
While the Northern Lights may be more commonly associated with far-flung places like Iceland or Scandinavia, they can sometimes be seen right here in North Yorkshire. If you're staying with us, you might just find yourself in the right place at the right time to experience this incredible light show.
What is the Aurora Borealis?
The Aurora Borealis is a natural light display that occurs when solar particles collide with the Earth's magnetic field, causing ionization and producing beautiful swirls of green, purple, and red light in the night sky. Typically visible in higher latitudes, such as the Arctic Circle, the Northern Lights are a rare but breathtaking sight in the UK. The further north you go, the more likely you are to witness this otherworldly spectacle, which is why our location in North Yorkshire, under a Dark Sky Reserve, makes us an ideal spot for viewing.
Why Prospect House Farm is Perfect for Aurora Sightings
Our campsite offers a prime vantage point for those hoping to catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights. Set far away from the light pollution of big cities, the skies above Suffiled are incredibly clear and dark, providing the perfect backdrop for celestial wonders. Our guests are often delighted by the chance to witness the shimmering auroras in the crisp, clear night sky, especially when solar activity is high.
If you’re lucky enough to visit during a period of increased solar activity, you might be treated to a light show unlike anything you've seen before. The bright colours will dance and ripple across the sky, sometimes stretching in bands or even arcs that seem to stretch from horizon to horizon.
Make sure if you are booking and really want to maximise your experiance, speak to us in advnace. Whilst you are here we will be watching the forecasts for Aurora possibilities and regurally photograph the events. All the photography on this blog is taken on site by us.

When Can You See the Northern Lights?
While the Northern Lights can be seen at any time of the year, the best chances for sightings in the UK typically occur between September and March. 2024 though proved a phenomenal time to see them with sightings through most of the year. The winter months offer longer nights and darker skies, increasing your chances of catching a glimpse of the auroras. But remember, the Aurora is a natural phenomenon, and sightings can’t be guaranteed—sometimes it’s a matter of perfect timing and luck.
To maximise your chances, it’s always helpful to keep an eye on solar activity reports. The more active the sun, the more likely the Northern Lights will appear. Websites and apps that track solar flares and geomagnetic activity can provide updates, so you can plan your evenings accordingly.
How to Make the Most of Your Aurora Experience
At Prospect House Farm Campsite, we want to make sure that your Northern Lights experience is unforgettable. Here are a few tips to ensure you have the best possible chance of seeing the Aurora:
Stay Up Late: The Northern Lights usually appear in the late evening or early morning hours. Keep an eye on the sky after sunset, and be prepared for a late-night adventure.
Dress Warmly: The colder months offer the best chance for Aurora sightings, so make sure to wrap up warmly and bring a blanket to sit under the stars.
Look for Clear Skies: Cloud cover can obscure your view of the lights, so check the weather forecast before heading out to stargaze. Our campsite’s location in a Dark Sky Reserve usually means clear skies, but it’s always best to double-check.
Head to an Open Space: Find a quiet, open spot on our campsite to get an unobstructed view of the night sky. The more rural and open the area, the better your chances of seeing the Aurora.
A Magical Experience Like No Other
There’s something incredibly magical about watching the Aurora Borealis light up the night sky from the peace and tranquillity of our campsite. Whether you’re a seasoned stargazer or simply someone who enjoys the beauty of nature, witnessing the Northern Lights is an experience you’ll never forget. Combine this with our peaceful and serene campsite, cosy glamping pods, and stunning surroundings, and you’ve got the perfect getaway for anyone looking to reconnect with nature and see something truly extraordinary.
So, the next time you’re planning a visit to our campsite, keep your fingers crossed for a clear, starry night and a little bit of solar activity. The Aurora might just put on a show you’ll remember for a lifetime.
